The versioning of page tempaltes and other objects is part of version 6.

If not, maybe a button within the widget properties (a widget that has been placed on a page) to sync it with the master widget?

The whole process of re-adding widgets is slow and laborious.

Not sure how it would be implemented, I know it's not appropriate for all widgets. Perhaps in the Site Manager > Widget > Widgent Name page, you could have a button that updates all widgets in the site to be the same as the "Master" widget?
